Our Community

Our Founders have worked with Buy One Give One www.b1g1.com for over 10 years, as a business partner supporting numerous causes.

When choosing which cause to support via the thousands listed on the B1G1 portal, the behemoth task gave rise to intense contemplation.   We centered our decision around the below questions:

  • Which charity do we trust, and can we see tangible results?
  • Which cause resonates most with the Wink Silk team ?
  • Which cause creates the most impact possible within the confines of our business framework?

We eventually chose to support Habitat for Humanity with their efforts in India to provide shelter for underprivileged children.  It’s cliche, but children are the future, and every child deserves to feel safe and have somewhere they call home, even if it’s just for the night.  Providing shelter takes vulnerable children off the street, away from the harms of the world.

With every purchase of a Wink Silk item, an underprivileged child is provided shelter for a few nights.

We were inspired by a beautiful tale about a ‘Star Thrower’ which we’ve shared with you below:

Adapted from The Star Thrower, by Loren Easily (1907 – 1977)

An old man used to go to the ocean to write. He would walk the stretch of the beach each morning, before putting pen to paper.  One morning, after a big storm he found the beach strewn with thousands of stranded starfish, as far as his eyes could see, stretching both directions of the beach.

In the distance, the old man noticed a small boy walking towards him. The boy would pause every so often, bending down and picking up an object, and throwing it into the sea.   As the boy walked closer, the Man said  “Good morning!  May I ask what you are doing?”

The young boy looked up, paused and replied “ I’m throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up to the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the boy replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless they are thrown back into the water.”

The old man answered back, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I don’t think you will be able to make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the sea. Then he turned to the old man, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

“Our wish at Wink silk is to play our role, however small and make meaningful differences to as many children we can reach”
